An animated GIF that appears to show a wind-blown stop sign hitting a weather reporter. during Hurricane Irma is actually from a failed television series. The clip from the show, “The Class” shows a stop sign crashing into the weather reporter during a storm. This clips is occasionally mistaken for genuine news footage; however, there is no truth to it.
An old animated GIF allegedly shows weather reporter Holly Ellenbogen getting hit by a stop sign while covering a hurricane was recirculated on social media in September 2017 along with a series of articles highlighting the lengths that journalist go to in order to cover major storms. While the clip is amusing, there is no truth behind it despite the current dilemma that weather reporters are facing.
Although this GIF is often shared in in humor among those on social media during major storms and hurricanes, it is still frequently posted alongside genuine clips of reporters who brave the dangerous weather. As a result, there are some on social media who falsely believe that this is a genuine clip of a weather reporter getting hit by a stop sign. But, that is not the case.
The footage comes from a 2006 episode of the television show The Class entitled “The Class Learns About Hurricanes” in which reporter Holly Ellenbogen, played by actress Lucy Punch, reports from the eye of a hurricane. You can see the context completely in the video below.
The Class is a sitcom which originally ran on CBS from Sept. 18, 2006 to March 5, 2007. The series followed the lives of eight very different alumni of the fictional Woodman Elementary School. The show was created by David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik’s production company in association with Warner Bros. Television. CBS announced on May 15, 2007 that The Class would not be renewed for a second season.
The Class The series revolves around a core group of eight 28-year-olds who were all in the same third-grade class 20 years ago. A former classmate brings them all together for a party to celebrate his engagement to a girl he met in the class. However, she ends up dumping him at the party as the reunited classmates get to know each other.
