A viral gif purportedly showing a woman playing ping pong with her face as a paddle is a digitally-manipulated fake. While the woman in the gif is not using her face as a table tennis racket, the full video is real—and is actually an advertisement for a skin care product.
According to Snopes, the misleading video was shared on Reddit and quickly went viral, accumulating hundreds of comments and thousands of upvotes. The gif, however, only shows part of the actual video, which features the skin care product at the end of a Japanese cosmetics company’s commercial. The original advertisement, which was released in 2015, can be viewed in full on Tofu Moritaya’s Facebook page.
While the video itself is a real commercial for their skin-tightening Tofu Yogurt Pack face mask, the woman is not actually using her face as a table tennis racket. When asked if the woman was really playing table tennis with her face, the company said they would “leave it to your imagination.” However, there are a few tell-tale signs that the “Face Table Tennis Girl” is nothing more than a farce.
The video appears to use several different camera tricks to make it appear more genuine, including excessive camera shake and motion blur, as one Redditor explained. Furthermore, the movement of the ball looks unnatural and all-around digitally manipulated. Watch the full video below:
The video is no doubt entertaining, but it is nothing more than a cleverly-edited skin care commercial. Seriously, don’t try this at home.
