Trick-or-treating is a Halloween staple for children young and old. What began as a “Celtic tradition of celebrating the end of the year by dressing up as evil spirits” as a defense mechanism, according to the Smithsonian magazine, the custom has since become a night for kids to parade creepy costumes and ask for lots of candy. To celebrate the scariest night of the year, Twitter users shared funny, and unexpected, descriptions of the annual tradition.

#TrickOrTreatingIn5Words, which became a trending hashtag in the Dastardly Tags hashtag game Tuesday afternoon, hilariously described the popular Halloween tradition of going from house to house for candy. The hashtag game, which generated more than 4,000 tweets, made references to fighting cavities, shutting off the porch lights and questioning why anybody ever grows up, especially when it’s Halloween.

Other popular hashtag games that have taken over Twitter this Halloween season include #SurviveAHorrorMovieIn5Words, #HalloweenCandySubstitutes, #TheMonstersSideOfTheStory and #MakeAHorrorFilmForKids. Take a look at some of the best #TrickOrTreatingIn5Words tweets below:
