Let’s face it: while most intentions are sincere when giving advice, this doesn’t necessarily mean all advice is sound advice you should follow.

Link building can be one of the most challenging pieces of the SEO puzzle. And since I know you don’t have time to shuffle through countless pieces of advice to find the big money ticket, I’ll spare you the headache.

Here’s some of the absolute worst advice floating around out there as it relates to link building.

1. Reaching Out to Sites with Lower Domain Authorities Than Yours

When you’re trying to climb the ranking ladder, you don’t want to spend time linking with lower domain authority sites. This method can be a waste of time and resources that you could have spent elsewhere.

Better Advice: Remember relevance is more important in ranking. Relevant links are seen as more natural links. Visitors to your website wants to see links relevant to the topic they are on right now, otherwise you may lose them completely.

2. Getting Links Too Fast

Generating too many links too fast can shoot up a flare alerting Google that some of your links may not be natural. You may initially see some small, short term benefits from this method, but eventually you will get caught and penalized. No matter the penalty you will take a hard blow to your organic search traffic and it’s quite possible your site might not be able to recover.

Better Advice: Instead you should be focusing your energy on getting high quality links from more authority’s sites within your industry. This will not only help increase your site rankings, but it will also draw the attention of qualified visitors from these sites.

3. Getting More Than One Link from the Same Source

A diversity of links is an important metric for a successful link building campaign. The larger number of unique domain links, the higher your rankings will be compared to your competition.

Better Advice: Don’t throw down the “no” hammer right away when you’re asked for a second link. If the source asking to link to you another time is from a higher ranking authority’s website, then by all means say yes. Large, higher ranked sights can provide all sorts of benefits when linking to you, one of those being MORE TRAFFIC! Just consider the source before you turn them down.

4. Using Links from Sites Outside of Your Own Niche

This one can be tricky, and it’s not entirely horrible advice. You definitely should shy away from sketchy link building strategies outside your niche. Black hat strategies such as link trading, buying links and directory links you want to stay away from. It’s important to note that linking within your niche is definitely a great way to build your ranking. Google likes to take a look and see that the site linked in Site A has some relevance to Site B.
