Reports that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is working on legislation to ban barrel racing in 2018 are false. The animal rights organization has not announced that they are currently working on legislation to ban the popular rodeo event—rumors that they were developing a new law stemmed from a prank news website.

According to Hoax Alert, the fake claim originated on React365, a prank news website that allows users to trick their friends by creating hoaxes. The article, which was allegedly shared more than 40,000 times, claimed that PETA was working to ban the event given the increase in injuries of the horses over the years. It purported:

PETA has been working over time to stop barrel racing in the United States. A rep from PETA would not return our calls at press time. Sources say they are concerned about the growing increase of injuries in barrel horses. Legislation would prohibit riders from barrel racing horses, but would support riders running the pattern on their own two feet. Horses are welcome to be spectators.

The report, however, is entirely fabricated. While PETA does have several articles on their website that mention barrel racing and other rodeo events, they have not declared that they are working on legislation to ban it. The user-generated hoax website states in their disclaimer:

This website is an entertainment website, news are created by users. These are humourous news, fantasy, fictional, that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information.

React365 allows users to create their own prank articles to trick their friends and family. These articles very often end up going viral on social media due to their deceptive nature. Users simply create a fake title, write a short description and upload an image to produce their own hoax article, which looks genuine when shared on Facebook or Twitter.
