Paul Ryan Endorses Antifa In Fake Quote

By Erica Abbott

A meme purportedly showing a quote in which House Speaker Paul Ryan endorses the anti-fascist (antifa) movement is fake. Ryan has not released any statements on antifa, much less endorsed the protesters or their values.

According to Snopes, the fake quote appears to have originated in a meme on @CambridgeAntifa, a fake antifa Twitter account that is not afficliated with the actual movement. “Do I agree with all of Antifa’s tactics? No. Of course not,” the meme reads. “But I agree with their core values. Antifa stands for the greater global good. And so do I.” Ryan, however, never expressed his support (or condemnation) of antifa. The quote is not authentic.

In a statement shared after the deadly “Unite the Right” white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Ryan rebuked Trump’s response to the violence, writing, “The immediate condemnations from left, right, and center affirmed that there is no confusion about right and wrong here. There are no sides. There is no other argument. We will not tolerate this hateful ideology in our society.” Ryan’s statement led some Trump supporters to label him as an antifa supporter, however, he has not expressed his views one way or another regarding the movement.

On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi condemned the “violent actions” of so-called antifa protesters. “Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts,” she said in a statement. “The violent actions of people calling themselves antifa in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted.” Other politicians have shared varying opinions about antifa.

Here are some examples of people sharing the fake quote on social media:

This is an incredible statement to make. #ANTIFA is openly terrorist organization on the left. “Republican” #Paul_Ryan agrees with them?
