Jon Bernthal debuted in the role of Frank Castle, aka. The Punisher, in the second season of Marvel and Netflix’s “Daredevil” TV series. His overall work with the character stole the show. So much so that Marvel ordered a spin-off starring vigilante character.
The first season has now finished filming and is due for release in full on the streaming service sometime in late 2017. One of the first season’s directors, Stephen Surjik, spoke with LA Talk Radio about the series and revealed it has a different tone to all the other previous Marvel/Netflix series collaborations:
“It is different than the other Marvel shows as far as it is an adult drama. There are no superpowers. You know the Punisher is a character who is based on vengeance, fundamentally. His family is a victim of some horrific thing, but the character himself is well-known and the way that they approach it is very different from the other shows.”
Since the Punisher is so different from more traditionally heroic characters, like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, or Iron Fist, it is not surprising to hear Marvel is taking a unique approach with his solo series. He is an anti-hero at the end of the day, and it is a much more difficult task making a killer easy to root for.
Surjik has helmed episodes of all the previous Marvel and Netflix shows with the next series being “The Defenders” which will arrive August 18th. He directed ‘Seven Minutes in Heaven’, which was the episode that delivered one of Punisher’s most memorable action sequences in his prison-break scene.
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb in a press release, “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.”
Said Lightfoot, in a statement, “For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
Marvel’s The Punisher marks the sixth series ordered as part of the collaboration between Netflix and Marvel Television, including the upcoming Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the ensemble miniseries The Defenders – along with Jessica Jones and the aforementioned Daredevil.
In his vigilante endeavors, Castle has crossed paths with several costumed crime-fighters, most notably Spider-Man and Daredevil. These encounters have often resulted in his incarceration. While he is known to be significantly inferior to Daredevil in hand-to-hand combat skills, Punisher has been rated as one of the most dangerous criminals alive. When he was incarcerated in New York’s Riker’s Island Prison, though heavily outnumbered in gang-fights, Punisher has routinely killed armed, homicidal criminals with frightening ease, sustaining no injury.
