By Shawn Rice

Johnny Gates performed “Hands To Myself” by Selena Gomez to show his pop side on The Voice playoffs. Gwen Stefani made him her comeback choice. He is fighting for a spot on the Top 12.

Alicia Keys felt like there is such a spirit between him and Gwen. Alicia loved his energy and that he gave his all. Alicia said it came across that he loves to perform. Gwen was excited that Johnny got to come back. She said that he has an incredible spirt and attitude. She thinks Johnny is a great frontman and is the real deal.

What did you think of the performance? Let us know in the comments section.

Johnny started pursuing music at 18 when he was asked to join the band Runaway Saints because he “had awesome hair.” They performed locally in Rhode Island and moved to Nashville in 2008. Nathan Chapman, a Taylor Swift producer, took them under his wing, but after multiple album setbacks, Johnny moved to Los Angeles. Not long after moving, he opened for Rod Stewart for three weeks on a Midwest tour. The band is currently on a break, but Johnny continues to play around the L.A. scene.

The three-time Emmy Award-winning “The Voice” returns with the strongest vocalists from across the country invited to compete in the blockbuster vocal competition show’s new season. Grammy Award-winning artist Gwen Stefani returns as a coach this season, joining megastars Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton and host Carson Daly.

The show’s innovative format features five stages of competition: the first begins with the blind auditions, followed by the battle rounds, the knockouts, the live playoffs and, finally, the live performance shows.

In the live playoff rounds, the Top 20 artists compete to secure a spot in the live shows. Artists perform live, and America votes to save their two favorite artists from each team. The coaches then save one remaining artist to complete their roster. The remaining contestants move on to the final phase of the competition – the live shows.
