JD Wetherspoon, British Pub Chain, Banning Remembrance Poppies Due To ‘Multiculturalism’ Is False

By Shawn Rice

JD Wetherspoon banning remembrance poppies due to “multiculturalism” is a false rumor. There is no truth to a claim that the British pub chain founded in 1979 was banning the flowers due to “multiculturalism”. Where did this rumor originate? In October 2017, a Twitter account posing as JD Wetherspoon falsely claimed that the chain was forbidding staff from wearing the poppy.

What followed was social media reacting to these rumors. The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower typically worn on Remembrance Day, mostly in Commonwealth countries. The poppy commemorates military members who have died in conflict zones in its venues.

A chain of British bubs called weather spoons have released a statement saying due to the multicultural mix of their staff they won’t be wearing the poppy to commemorate armistice this year.

There is a story that Weatherspoons pub chain will not allow their staff to wear the poppy this november in honour of the fallen in war is this true ?

However, that rumor is false, according to Snopes. The Twitter account, @WETHERSP00N_UK, was able to fool many social media users into believing it was an authentic page for JD Wetherspoon. The fake account shared the following tweet:

Due to the ever expanding multiculturalism of our clientele and employees this year our staff will not be wearing the poppy while working.

Reactions on social media were obviously negative with many protesting against the pub chain based on the phony tweet. Here are some reactions to the false rumor on social media.

@Wetherspoon_UK Where is the multicultural approach in this – There is a saying “if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing “
