James Earl Jones dressing as Darth Vader during press of the original Star Wars film to avoid racial segregation laws in 1970s London is a false claim. There is no truth to a widely circulated claim of a photograph showing someone dressed as Darth Vader alongside Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Kenny Baker.
Where did this claim originate? It is no specifically known but the photograph allegedly showing Jones dressed as Darth Vader on the streets of London alongside other Star Wars actors, is frequently shared with the false claim that Jones had to do so in order to socialize incognito. The reason to support this claim was due to London’s “strict segregation laws.”

However, there is no truth to the claim, according to Snopes. In further opposition to the above claim, there were no “strict segregation laws” in London in 1979. Nor was there any segregation laws in England at all. Rather, the 1965 Race Relations Act prohibited “discrimination on racial grounds in places of public resort.”
Although Jones is well-known as the voice of Darth Vader, the actor did not actually physically portray the Sith Lord and Luke Skywalker father on the big screen. Therefore, it would have been strange for Jones to wear the costume for a promotional event. Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker, and who appears in the photograph, tweeted a response to the false claim that Jones was inside the costume.

Dave Prowse, the actor who actually portrayed Darth Vader on the big screen sent a tweet out himself about the controversy. He noted that it is not him either in the shared picture.

Jones most recently reprised his role as Vader’s foreboding voice for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) leads the cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and is joined by Diego Luna (Milk, Killing Them Softly), Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline,” Mississippi Grind), Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade II), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal,” Casino Royale), Alan Tudyk (“Firefly”) who plays a performance-capture character in the film, and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Go to the full article.
