Now that President Donald Trump is under investigation for a possible collusion with Russia during the U.S. presidential election, many are asking if fired FBI Director James Comey and Special Counsel Bob Mueller are “best friends” and if that presents a conflict of interest.

Comey’s attorney has previously said that the two men know each other from working together as former U.S. Department of Justice colleagues but are hardly considered “best friends.” Additionally, experts suggest that the relationship does not meet conflict of interest legal criteria.

Breitbart.com published a story on June 12, 2017, reporting that former Assistant FBI Director James Kallstrom had told them that Comey is “best friends” with Mueller, who has been appointed special counsel to lead an investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign.

Kallstrom said that the relationship presents a conflict of interest which is hampering the Russia probe.

Bob Mueller and Jim Comey are the best of friends and have been for over two decades. How do you appoint a special counsel who is a longtime friend? It’s a massive conflict of interest.

Breitbart also cited a piece written by journalist Garrett Graff in Politico magazine, in which Graff describes the pair’s working relationship as follows.

While Mueller technically reported to Comey as deputy attorney general, Comey, two decades his junior, treated Mueller as a close friend and almost mentor. The men had known each other for years as each rose into the small, elite fraternity of prosecutors at the top of the Justice Department

However, Comey did not appoint Mueller as he had been fired by the time Mueller was brought on board by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Here are some reactions on social media to Comey and Mueller’s relationship.

So, Comey paid off by Clinton, Mueller and Comey friends, and Rosenstein bought and paid for! Welcome to Washington cartel, Pathetic 👍🏻😎

So convenient. Comey “gave his memos” to his bestie Mueller so he wouldn’t have to turn them over to Congress. No one will EVER see them.

Mueller’s compromised because of close friendship w/Comey. The ethical thing for Mueller to do is recuse himself. If not, he shld be fired.

Comey and Mueller were joined at the hip at the DOJ and FBI. It’s a mentor-protege relationship. How is this fair to our President Trump pic.twitter.com/EVpTzJbv84

According to Snopes, Comey’s attorney said that the extent of the friendship between the two men has been exaggerated. David Kelley, Comey’s attorney, said the idea that Comey is “best friends” with Mueller is an overstatement. He said the two have a genial relationship as former colleagues. Their history is even well-documented by the news media.
