It is all about the money. Stephen Curry agreed to a five-year, $201 million extension with the Golden State Warriors. This contract with the two-time NBA MVP would be the richest in league history.

Curry’s deal will make him the first NBA star to sign a supermax contract. What will this mean for the future of basketball now that the crossing of a $200 million threshold will eventually become the norm for the NBA’s biggest superstars. An eight-year veteran, Curry has been the foundational star for the Warriors, who recently won their second NBA championship in three years.

Certainly, Curry can bring in the fans for the Warriors. And, so far, he has helped the team clinch two NBA championships. Only time will tell if this is a good payoff for the Warriors.

Curry was congratulated by the most prominent force in the league in LeBron James. The two just did some battle in this year’s NBA Finals with the Warriors easily defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers. Curry is on the very short list of biggest competitors on the floor for James, which undoubtedly makes this slightly surprising in the minds of some.

Congrats @StephenCurry30!!

How does this contract compare to others in other sports?

Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke is the closest at $34.4 million, while the NFL’s Derek Carr is next at $25 million. NHL stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane get the short end of the stick with a measly $10.5 million each. Because Curry’s contract is limited to five years by the NBA, he is still a ways off from having the highest total contract amount in sports. That honor goes to Giancarlo Stanton, who signed a 13-year, $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins before the 2015 season.
