Reports that Imelda Marcos, former first lady of the Philippines, died from cardiac arrest at the age of 87 are false. Marcos is the latest victim of a death hoax that seems to have stemmed from an erroneous tweet.
According to Snopes, the fake claim originated on Asia News, a disreputable news website. The article, which offered its condolences to the family and the Philippian community, claimed that Marcos had died after collapsing at her home. It purported:
Former First Lady of Philippines, Imelda Marcos, the widow of Ferdinand Marcos, the 10th president of the Philippines is reported dead few hours ago after she collapsed in her residence.
According to Dr. Marieta De Luna, the Former First Lady was rushed to the Manila Medical Centre in Ermita wee hours of today, but died shortly just during when the doctors were attending to her.
“A team of doctors including myself worked tirelessly, we did all we could but couldn’t materialise.”-Dr. Marieta said.
Marcos, however, is still alive. The former first lady of the Philippines confirmed that it was nothing more than a hoax last month, saying, “Still alive, just old.” The confusion appears to have been caused by a tweet from actress and Bacoor Mayor Lani Mercado-Revilla, who mistakenly reported the death of Marcos and offered her condolences to the Marcos family. Mercado-Revilla, who apologized and deleted her tweets, later claimed that her Twitter account was hacked.
CNN reports that the Marcos family “were accused of stealing billions of dollars from the Philippine people” during Ferdinand Marcos’ 20-year presidency. They were known for living a lavish lifestyle as the nation’s levels of unemployment and poverty increased.
