Reports that House Democrats are introducing a bill to remove the citizenship requirement for the presidency are false. Rumors that non-natural-born citizens would be eligible to assume the office of the president stemmed from a self-described satire website.
According to PolitiFact, the fake claim originated on The Last Line of Defense and was republished on several disreputable news websites. The article claimed that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Keith Olbermann introduced a bill to remove the citizenship eligibility requirement for the 2020 presidential election. It purported:
Democrats have sank to a new low! Since they can’t find an American who can beat Donald Trump in 2020, they are now trying to do the next best thing: outsource the job.
Democrat Congressmen Nancy Pelosi and Keith Olbermann introduced H.B. 2169-B, which would remove the requirement that the President be born here.
“For too long we have been relying on an archaic idea that the President can only serve the United States if he or she has lived here all his or her life,” Pelosi said in a statement. “Our bill would prove that wrong by allowing someone to run if they have lived here for two years.”
The report, however, is entirely fabricated. While the H.R. 2169 – Improving Fusion Centers’ Access to Information Act was introduced by Rep. John Katko earlier this year, it has nothing to do with the bill mentioned in the article, which is not real. Furthermore, Olbermann is not a Democratic congressman, he is a political commentator.
Additionally, The Last Line of Defense clearly states in their disclaimer that their articles are completely fictitious:
America’s Last Line of Defense is a satirical publication that may sometimes appear to be telling the truth. We assure you that’s not the case. We present fiction as fact and our sources don’t actually exist. Names that represent actual people and places are purely coincidental and all images should be considered altered and do not in any way depict reality.
Citizenship is still one of three eligibility requirements for the presidency. The natural-born citizen clause states, “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the U. S. at the time of the adoption of this Constitution shall be eligible to the office of President.”
