Winter finally came on Game of Thrones but fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the outcome. While HBO’s Game of Thrones just finished airing its seventh season, fans are already thinking about those last six episodes expected to to air of the big-budget fantasy series in its eighth and final season.
But exactly how long will Game of Thrones fans to wait to see it is the million dollar question. Production on the new episodes are already slated to begin in October, but a new report at The Live Feed says that despite the shorter episode run – filming is expected to go for nearly a year.
The report suggests the shoot could run as late as August 2018 which would mean an early 2019 premiere date. HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys says that there is no definitive timeline in place yet:
“Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take. The shooting is complicated enough — on different continents, with all the technical aspects — and the special effects are a whole other production period that we’re trying to figure out. That is a big factor in all of this.”
The above quote supports comments made by show sound designer Paula Fairfield that every episode of the final season could run feature-length just like the recent seventh season finale.
Of course, it also can’t have escaped HBO’s notice that the delay of season seven only helped increase fan anticipation; the ratings for Game of Thrones’ seventh season were the show’s highest ever, and after a twist-filled finale, viewers will no doubt be clamoring to find out how the epic series finally resolves.
Maybe if fans are lucky, George R.R. Martin might put out his next book in the series. To the frustration of many, The Winds of Winter was initially pegged to be released in or around 2014, Martin having started work on it at the turn of the decade. But this didn’t come to pass, with Martin claiming in interviews that he would be refusing to comment further about possible release dates.
Martin last updated fans on his progress back in July, when he wrote on his LiveJournal that he was “still working on it” and that he has “good days and bad days, and that’s all I care to say.” He also disputed rumours that the book is finished yet has been left unpublished for “some nefarious reason”, as well as speculation that he hasn’t actually written any of it at all.
Martin’s best-selling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” is brought to the screen as HBO sinks its considerable storytelling teeth into the medieval fantasy epic. It’s the depiction of two powerful families — kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men — playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne. Martin is credited as a co-executive producer and one Go to the full article.
