Reports that a flight crew took a knee and left the New Orleans Saints stranded on the runway are false. Rumors that the crew walked off because of the players’ “disrespect” stemmed from a self-described satire website.
According to Hoax Alert, the fake claim originated on Freedum Junkshun, a website that publishes fake news and political satire. The article claimed that the pilot and co-pilot of Boeing 737 took a knee and left the New Orleans Saints players stranded on the runway until the following day. It purported:
The New Orleans Saints made the mistake of once again disrespecting our veterans, our country and our flag. After an embarrassing opening to a game with the worst ratings in Saints’ history, the players and coaches learned that their actions have consequences.
Both the pilot and co-pilot of the Boeing 737 the Saints use to travel are combat-hardened American heroes. They flew sorties over Baghdad with Saddam’s best weapons firing back. They fought with their lives for your freedom and watched many of their friends die. Today they took a stand for those brave souls:
“We couldn’t be a party to the disrespect. We waited until we were cleared and last off the runway for the night , walked out of the cockpit, took a knee and deplaned. They’re not going anywhere until tomorrow.”
The report, however, is entirely fabricated. The photo used in the article appears to be a computer-generated image and there is no evidence to suggest that any flight crew took a knee following the Saints’ game against the Miami Dolphins in London. Freedum Junkshun states in their disclaimer that their articles are completely fictitious:
We believe that there is nothing more precious than the mind of an aging conservative. Here we gather a boatload of bullhonkey, works of pure satirical fiction, to give the fist-shakers of the world a reason to hate. Reality is often in the eye of the beholder. You won’t find any of it here.
On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints took a knee before the playing of the national anthem and stood in solidarity when Darius Rucker began singing at Wembley Stadium. Saints quarterback Drew Brees tweeted on Friday that the team would “stand together” during the playing of the anthem—joining hundreds of other NFL players who have recently knelt or locked arms in solidarity following President Donald Trump’s Twitter attacks toward the league.
As a way to show respect to all, our #Saints team will kneel in solidarity prior to the national anthem & stand together during the anthem.
