Dwayne Johnson Confirms Black Adam And Shazam Films But Could He Appear In Man Of Steel 2 To Face Superman?
By Shawn Rice
Dwayne Johnson helped settled some rumors that appeared recently on Reddit concerning the future of the DC extended film universe. The rumor indicated that Warner Bros. Pictures was pulling Johnson’s Black Adam character from the “Shazam” film with that project being effectively scrapped. Instead he would be used as the villain of the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel along with getting his own “Black Adam” film.
Henry Cavill teased over Christmas that Superman will clash with Black Adam at some point, and the characters have fought in the comics. It is uncertain if that is the case. Speaking this week during “The Fate of the Furious” press junket, Johnson confirmed to MTV that as far as he is concerned the “Shazam” and “Black Adam” separate films are still on.
“We’ve had great discussions with Geoff Johns over at DC. This is a really fun, cool time for DC right now because they’re world-building. We’re seeing that with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. We have a few surprises down the line. So what we decided to do was to create a scenario where Black Adam has his stand-alone movie, and Captain Marvel, Shazam, has his stand-alone movie. We’re building our world that way, and then we can come together at some point… We have a surprise for Black Adam coming up. I can’t tell you what it is, but it is gonna be… it’s gonna be f–king awesome.”
However, that comment does not necessarily rule out the “Man of Steel 2” rumor. Either way all of those films from “Black Adam” to “Shazam” to “Man of Steel 2” remain very much in the development stage and won’t be coming to the screen anytime soon.
Originally Teth-Adam of Kahndaq, Johnson’s character Black Adam first appeared in Marvel Family #1 in 1945 and has gone on to be both a villain and an anti-hero throughout his history. The character has powers comparable to that of Shazam, including flight, strength, agility, lightning manipulation, as well as magic.
It was reported back in February that Light’s Out director David F. Sandberg was in talks to direct the Shazam feature, though no word has come down on who will helm the Black Adam movie as of yet.
Johnson’s film slate is jam packed at the moment. He is about to start shooting Rampage, then he will roll on into filming the high-concept blockbuster Skyscraper, and he just announced that Disney has given Jungle Cruise the greenlight to tentatively start filming in Spring 2018—assuming they find a director. And that is not to mention the other potential projects currently being considered like San Andreas 2 and Doc Savage.
The other rumor suggested that Warner was planning to release four “Batman” films in 2019 to celebrate the character’s 80th anniversary. DC Films co-head Jon Berg sent out a tweet today shooting down the report as a joke – “Hey @geoffjohns why didn’t you tell me we were releasing 4 Batman movies in 2019? Can we increase that to 10?”.
