Disney Draws Controversy After Casting White Actor As New Character In Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Remake

By Erica Abbott

Disney is once again facing backlash over a casting announcement for their live-action remake of “Aladdin.” Billy Magnussen will reportedly play a brand new character in the retelling of the 1992 classic—and fans of the original animated musical are not happy.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Magnussen, who has starred in “Bridge of Spies,” “The Big Short” and “Into the Woods,” was cast as Prince Anders, a role that was created specifically for the Guy Ritchie-directed remake. “Magnussen will take on the new role created for the movie musical, with all other character details remaining buried in the Cave of Wonders,” the report reads. “He joins Saturday Night Live alum Nasim Pedrad, who is set to play the original character Mara, a handmaiden and friend to Jasmine.” The casting announcement, however, was met with accusations of whitewashing.

After Disney announced their latest live-action project last year, petitions against whitewashing were created given Hollywood’s whitewashing trend. “Aladdin” producer Dan Lin assured fans in February that they were seeking a diverse cast in order to create a more “authentic” movie. Since their announcement, however, casting choices have been met with backlash.

In July, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Disney was struggling to cast actors of Middle Eastern or Indian descent who could both act and sing for the lead roles. Then, just days later at the D23 Expo, it was revealed that Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine) and Will Smith (Genie) were cast in their respective roles. The casting of a non-Arab actress as Jasmine quickly drew criticism, while others defended the decision given the film’s fictional setting of Agrabah. Last month, some found it odd that an attractive actor was cast as the villainous Jafar.

Many, however, viewed the casting of Magnussen to be the biggest misstep yet.

We just started shooting Aladdin and I wanted to intro you guys to our new family… Mena Massoud/Aladdin, Naomi Scott/Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari/Jafar, and I'm over here gettin my Genie on. Here we go!

The original film featured Scott Weinger as Aladdin, Linda Larkin as Princess Jasmine, Jonathan Freeman as Jafar, Gilbert Gottfried as Iago and the late Robin Williams as the Genie.

The live-action remake does not yet have a release date.

This is purely a cynical effort by @Disney to make “Aladdin” more palatable to white viewers. It is needless and insulting to all involved. https://t.co/o5KYxw9ttK
