Did Bernie Sanders Buy A $172,000 Car with Presidential Campaign Funds?

By Erica Abbott

Did Vermont Senator and former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders use campaign funds to purchase a $172,000 luxury car? While images purportedly showing Sanders driving a bright red Audi R8 may seem convincing on the surface, they are fake.

According to Snopes, the misleading images of Sanders driving an Audi R8 began circulating last year in the months leading up to Election Day. One user claimed that the “hypocrite” Sanders had used campaign donations to buy an expensive luxury car, as apparently evidenced by photographs of the car following a campaign vehicle and another showing the driver—which many agreed appeared to resemble Sanders.

Others used photos of Sanders standing next to a red car as proof, however, they actually showed the senator viewing a Tesla Electric car, not an Audi R8. The photo gallery reads:

Sen. Bernie Sanders gets a first hand look at the Tesla Electric car, a new vehicle that runs fully on electricity, uses no gasoline and emits no tail-pipe emissions at all. Bernie favors the use of domestic electricity to power cars as an alternative to expensive, polluting gasoline.

The photos have nothing to do with the misleading Audi R8 images. While a few of the images that users shared to support their argument were genuine, the ones showing Sanders driving the luxury car were not. He did not buy a luxury car using presidential campaign funds. Snopes point out, however, that even if Sanders was the one driving the car, the photos would not have indicated how he purchased it.

While the images do not appear to actually depict Sanders, Sanders’ spending decisions did become a topic of much debate last year. Last summer, he bought his third home for $600,000, which drew strong reactions from both supporters and haters. Others praised him in 2015 when he was spotted flying coach. It has not been reported recently, however, that Sanders purchased a new car, much less a luxury one.

Here are some examples of people sharing the misleading image on social media:
