Reports that the U.S. Department of Justice labeled the anti-fascist (antifa) movement a terrorist organization are false. Rumors that antifa was marked as a hate group stemmed from a well-known purveyor of fake news and satire.
According to Hoax Alert, the fake claim originated on The Last Line of Defense, a website known for publishing fake news and political satire. The article claimed that the “violent leftist” members of antifa would be put behind bars after Attorney General Jeff Sessions officially labeled it a terrorist group. It purported:
It’s been a long time coming, but the fascists calling themselves an anti-fascist movement are finally labeled what they are by the Department of Justice: a hate group.
Recently, the Antifa terrorists have been storming free speech rallies to fight against…free speech. To date, 163 innocent people have been attacked, beaten, and subjected to horrible treatment from the “tolerant Left.”
“From this point on, each and every member of Antifa who attacks an innocent person will be charged with terroristic acts,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday. “This has gone on long enough.”
The report, however, is entirely fabricated. While a WhiteHouse.gov petition to formally recognize antifa as a terrorist organization has garnered more than 300,000 signatures, the movement has not been labeled by the DOJ as such. Moreover, the photo used in the fake report is not genuine. Additionally, The Last Line of Defense states in their disclaimer that their articles are completely fictitious:
America’s Last Line of Defense is a satirical publication that may sometimes appear to be telling the truth. We assure you that’s not the case. We present fiction as fact and our sources don’t actually exist. Names that represent actual people and places are purely coincidental and all images should be considered altered and do not in any way depict reality.
Recently, Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham called for antifa to be labeled a terrorist organization. “There is not one central organization, they’re all over the place, but there is a way to pursue this and I hope this administration is looking at this very carefully because people could die here,” she said as The Hill reports.
